Plaza de las Tres Culturas Visitor Center Competition. Mexico City, Mexico, 2007.
The brief called for a visitor center to be located at the Plaza de las Tres Culturas--named as such for being surrounded by vestiges of the prehispanic, colonial and modern periods. The plaza was notoriously the site of the 1968 student massacre. Faced with a site so particularly, we opted for “tucking in” the proposal under the plaza. The strategy does not mean to shy away from the site, but to add, through typical posmodern self-awareness, a fourth presence.
