Flood Shelter (Tenosique, Mexico, 2010)

The Usumacinta River in Tabasco, Mexico floods regularly. The project explores the concept of anti-fragility. More than bouncing back--as is the case with resilience--antifragile systems seek to become stronger after disasters. An analysis of the flood plane defines the density of a grid of structural elements that could potentially harness the power of the flood to self-erect. The resulting structure can then be completed and used as a hostel during the drought season and as a shelter during the flood season.
