Torres de Satélite Intervention (Estado de México, México, 2009)
Ciudad Satelite was founded in 1957 as a suburban offshoot of Mexico City. Pritzker prize winning architect Luis Barragan designed the now famous “Torres de Satelite” as a landmark to signal the entrance of the new town. In the 50 years since its conception, the site has become a Ballardian ‘concrete island’ drowned in car traffic and inaccessible to people on foot. The proposal consists of a field of light reflecting structures surrounding the towers meant to be experienced as a kinetic light sculpture from passing cars. A pedestrian underpass serves to connect the island with its surroundings creating a sunken public space isolated from traffic open only to the sky framed by the towers.
