Thane River Delta Recovery Masterplan (Mumbai, India, 2009)
Thane Creek’s wetlands located between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai (New Mumbai) provide an invaluable service to the city in the form of flood mitigation during the monsoon season. However, informal growth is slowly encroaching on them. Conservation efforts have been piecemeal. In the minds of its inhabitants, the city center lies at the tip of the peninsula, but the project reveals that Thane Creek is the invisible green heart at the geographic center of Mumbai. The project seeks to render the site legible and recognizes that, in order to preserve, change is necessary. The resulting master plan and its nine clusters of strategic projects is an exploration of “urbanization without density.”
