Airport City (Long Island, U.S.A., 2009)
The airspace around New York is quickly becoming saturated. The project proposes a new airport on Long Island to complement the existing three. However, following recent airport development trends and inspired by Le Corbusier’s plan for a contemporary city with an airport in its center, the new airport is meant as a self-contained city. The project aims to explore to what extent a city’s ecological footprint can match its own built footprint. The core of the terminal is densely urbanized while the land surrounding the runways is developed as a series of supporting landscape infrastructures.
