Tlatelolco Site Museum (Ciudad de Mexico, Mexico, 2007)

The brief called for a visitor center to be located at the Plaza de las Tres Culturas--named after its location, surrounded by samples of prehispanic, colonial, and modern period architecture. Notoriously, the plaza was also the site of the 1968 student massacre. Faced with such a loaded history, we opted for “tucking in” the proposal under the plaza. The strategy does not mean to shy away from the site, but to add, through typical postmodern self-awareness, a fourth presence “swept under the rug.”
