Tulum Site Museum (Tulum, Mexico, 2006)

The brief for a site museum in Tulum’s archaeological site forbade locating the new structure within the site’s perimeter wall. A glass box, sunken in the ocean, could provide a unique vantage point of the site while doubling as a pier. As a playful challenge to preservationist conventions, the proposal included a mechanical retractable viewing deck which could provide the best views of the site without permanently altering it.
