Sao Paolo Art Museum Extension (Sao Paolo, Brazil, 2005)

The brief called for a high rise along the Avenida Paulista in São Paulo, Brazil. Instead, the project explores the possibilities of an underground ‘earthscraper’ as an extension for italo-brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi’s Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP). The underground museum extension, equal parts gallery and warehouse, creates a pedestrian connection between two of the largest public spaces in town: the MASP plaza and the Trianon park across the Paulista avenue. Lined with people movers it resembles a modern airport terminal. Large periscopes bring in views from the park above and light into smaller gallery spaces.
